Isolation Cotton is a common material on airplanes, so what is it for? Well, mainly it has four functions: Sound Insulation, Heat Insulation, Flame Retardancy and Smoke Control, and Moisture Control.

Let's take a look at its structure first. It’s mainly composed of three sections, namely, cover film, fiberglass cushion, and polymer foam.

Sound Insulation: when the aircraft is flying in the air, the air flow will cause aircraft skin and structure to vibrate and that’s how the noise comes out. We also have noises generated by the engines. The Isolation Cotton will absorb, isolate and reflect these noises.

Heat Insulation: Insulation Cotton could keep too hot or too cold air out of cabin, ensuring a comfortable environment for passengers along with the air conditioning system.

Flame Retardancy and Smoke Control: Insulation Cotton prevents smoke from the pressurized cabin area through the side panels by limiting the flow of air or smoke inside the Insulation Cotton. That’s why we call it “Air Dam”.

Moisture Control: This function is so important but often overlooked. Thanks to Insulation Cotton and Water-vapor Seals, cabin or avionics can be water-free. Moisture Control Felt performs to collect Water-vapor between the Insulation Cottons.
